What are customers saying about Octopus Energy?

The Ugly – 1-Star Reviews
To be fair to Octopus Energy, compared to other energy suppliers on our list, they ranked a lot higher. With an average overall score of 4.8 out of 5, they must be doing something right.
However, from the sample size of reviews we took, there were some common themes amongst customer reviews.

Firstly, as you can see, smart meters are not something Octopus Energy specialise in. It was clearly the most prevalent issue facing customers. Most of the reviews stated they simply did not work and caused plenty of trouble.
Customers having trouble with smart meters can be extremely worrying, especially during the current energy crisis. People are trying to save as much as possible, so by having a faulty smart meter, Octopus Energy isn’t helping out.
Next up we can see some problems with customer service, described as ‘appalling’ and ‘terrible’. No one wants to be treated poorly, especially when it comes to such a sensitive subject as your energy.
This is a worrying sign for Octopus Energy as many customers are now sick and tired of how they conduct business. With a heavy reluctance to help with customer calls, these reviews are a stark reminder.
The Bad – 3-Star Reviews
The bad saw some similar issues cropping up. Again, major, major difficulties for customers facing the smart meters. Seriously Octopus Energy, this needs fixing. But, we won’t fixate on those problems, let’s look at some others.

Well, as you can see from our image, there is one word that stands out by a clear distance. ‘SLOW’. There was a shockingly high number of customers complaining about how slow things are.
This ranged from customer service times to terribly slow systems to providing closing bills and even people waiting 18 Months for a delayed monthly statement. People having to wait a long time for a variety of different tasks isn’t promising.
Next up was a theme of things being very difficult to do through Octopus. Bills were tricky to read, the website was a bit confusing and even reading the conditions were difficult for some. Clearly, there is a lot to be improved on.
If customers are finding it hard to read bills and the terms of the contract then something is wrong. They are extremely important parts of being an energy supplier.
The Good – 5 – Star Reviews
Okay so let’s save the best to last. As mentioned earlier, Octopus Energy has a great score when compared to other suppliers and it wasn’t too difficult to locate good reviews. 89% of more than 100,000 reviews rated as excellent is impressive. Let’s see what they do well.

It was lovely to see so many customer service staff getting glowing reviews from customers. I can imagine they are inundated with letters to say how good a job they’re doing. The words helpful and friendly cropped up a lot during our research, always a good sign.
In addition, plenty of customers would highly recommend switching to Octopus, with many being automatically switched due to supplier of last resort situations and now being over the moon. The majority of the reviews were similar, so good job Octopus.
