Utility Warehouse

Introduction to Utility Warehouse Energy

Utility Warehouse Energy is one of the largest contenders to breaking up the ‘Big6’ energy suppliers in the UK. They attract most of their customers through word of mouth advertising. Their unique selling point is that they bundle all of your monthly utilities into the one bill which reduces the hassle involved with utilities and saves customers money.

They manage to make up for their lack of advertising spending by running a multi-level marketing strategy, allowing people to sign up as ‘partners’ and to earn commission for others that they attract to the business. There are currently 45,000 partners with Utility Warehouse.

Background to Utility Warehouse Energy

Owned and operated by Telecom Plus PLC, who once had a 20% stake in rival Opus Energy (sold in 2017). Utility Warehouse is now the only energy supplier owned by the company. They are based in London as well as listed on the London Stock Exchange. They are licensed and regulated by Ofgem, like every other supplier in the UK.

What are customers saying about Utility Warehouse?

By searching reviews on Trustpilot it is clear to see that Utility Warehouse is reasonably well thought of in comparison to the rest of the larger UK energy suppliers. Out of 26,000 reviews, 66% are 5-stars and well over three quarters of reviews are positive in nature. There is a common theme of simplicity and customers value this. There are frequent mentions of friendly and professional customer service agents.

Of the 20% or so of customers who have had a negative experience with Utility Warehouse, the majority have reported unexpected rises in their bills. This is hardly a surprise given the current state of the energy market. However, regular reports of mistakes on the supplier end have led to often serious issues that customers struggle to resolve.

Customer Service

Compared to other energy suppliers, Utility Warehouse does reasonably well on the Customer Service front. They score a respectable 4 out of 5 stars on Which?

Utility Warehouse tariffs explained

Utility Warehouse guarantee that they are cheaper than the average variable tariffs from the Big6. They do so by adjusting the price you pay throughout your deal, meaning you will ‘never need to switch again.’ Many customers have reported rising bills so there is a doubt as to whether Utility Warehouse are keeping this promise.

The supplier offers two variable tariffs which operate on the basis of combining your energy bill with other utilities to make savings on time and cash. We have included two of the deals below.

TariffVariableValue Tariff (Energy Only)Gold Tariff (2 Services)Double Gold Tariff (4 Services)
Annual Cost£1,976£1,961£1,922£1,872
Monthly Cost£164£163.43£160.41£156.04

So, it is clear to see that their biggest USP is bundling energy, broadband, and mobile utilities together. Many customers opt for the higher end tariff options that allow them to bundle more utilities for a lower cost. The double gold tariff offers strong savings when compared to the price cap for dual-fuel tariffs, which many providers inflate their prices of during market volatility. Utility Warehouse do also offer fixed equivalents.

Fuel Mix

The fuel mix of Utility Warehouse falls short of the UK average for renewables, instead relying on Gas for the most part. The current standard for renewables as a portion of fuel mix is around a third and many suppliers already offer fully renewable tariffs. Here, renewables makes up well less than 5%.

The prevailing high use of coal in their fuel mix is concerning, almost double the national average. As a whole, Utility Warehouse fuel mix is three quarters unsustainable.

Contact Utility Warehouse

For customers of Utility Warehouse who would like to contact the energy supplier, there are a few different channels to follow depending on your unique issue. If you aren’t a customer yet, you must follow a different contact route. For non-members, we have included the contact details below.

DepartmentContact NumberOpening Hours
General Enquiries0333 777 0777Mon – Fri: 9AM to 5:30PM

Saturday: 9AM to 4:30PM

Sunday: Closed

Calls are charged at standard landline or mobile rates. Utility Warehouse also offer a callback option if you do not want to wait on hold for hours at time.

Email Contact

If you would prefer to get in contact over email, then you are out of luck. Utility Warehouse do not currently operate email support so you will have to fill out a contact form and wait for them to get back to you. Customers are often pointed in the direction of their FAQ section as a form of support.

App Capability

There is an app that allows you to manage your account from your phone, a welcome piece of kit for customers. It is possible to download the app from either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. You must log in with your Utility Warehouse Email login and then will be able to manage everything that you can on your online account.

Utility Warehouse Clubhouse

Another positive for customers is the rewards scheme that can offer cashback off their monthly energy bills. This is broken down into three steps:

Search: Browse from over 2,000 stores

Spend: Make purchases and earn up to 10% cashback

Save: Cashback earned will be deducted from monthly utility bill

Cashback Providers

There are big names involved in the scheme like Boots, Sainsbury’s, M&S, Argos, Debenhams, Expedia, Halfords, and more. It must be noted that very rarely does cashback ever reach the full 10% figure. Where this scheme is useful is if you regularly spend in several of the shops.

Clubhouse Login

Customers are able to manage their account via their dedicated UW Clubhouse App. This app is also used to manage the reward scheme so you will have to register even if you are not interested in earning cashback but want to manage your energy account from your phone.

The app also has other capabilities:

  • Provide meter readings
  • Find local stores to get cashback in and manage your CashBack card
  • Check your mobile usage (if your deal includes mobile)
  • Look at your bill summary

The app does attract criticism in that it does not offer the widest selection of functions, but rather only covers the basic necessities. It garners decent reviews in the region of 3 stars in both the App Store and Google Play.

For any customers who have signed up to the partner scheme, there is a dedicated portal to help you manage your business and find potential leads to introduce new customers to Utility Warehouse.
